Tuning In to Make a Decision
Making Decisions with Head, Heart, and Gut
Yesterday, I took a long solo walk to make an important business decision. I gave myself the time and permission to unplug, check in, and listen to myself.
We often rush decisions or try to force clarity through logic alone. But making choices that feel right requires something deeper: alignment between the head, heart, and gut. When all three are in sync, decisions become more congruent, grounded, and action-oriented. And that feeling? It’s unmistakable.
The Evidence
Research supports this approach. A study published in the Journal of Behavioral Decision Making found that individuals who integrate cognitive, emotional, and intuitive processing make more effective and satisfying decisions. Dr. Antonio Damasio, a renowned neurologist, has extensively studied this connection, demonstrating how emotions and gut instincts are integral to decision-making.
Cognitive Dissonance
The inner conflict fades, and with it, the weight of indecision. Instead of second-guessing, you gain a sense of certainty that frees up energy and allows you to move forward with confidence.
This alignment helps dissipate the uncomfortable feelings we have when our actions don’t match our values or beliefs. By listening to all three sources of wisdom, you create decisions that not only make sense but also feel right on a deeper level.
How to Check In with Yourself
If you’re facing a decision, take a moment to pause and reflect. Ask yourself:
Head: What are the facts? What logically makes sense?
Heart: How do I feel about this? Does this decision align with what I care about?
Gut: What is my intuition telling me? Is there a deeper knowing guiding me?
When all three are in agreement, you’ll feel a sense of clarity. If something feels off, it’s worth exploring why, perhaps something needs more attention.
A Simple Practice
If you’re feeling unsure, step away from the noise. Take a walk, journal, or sit quietly. Give yourself the space to listen. Trust that the answers are already within you - your head, heart, and gut instinct are there to guide you forward.
Next time you need to make a decision, check in with all three. See what shifts when you give yourself the time and space to listen. You might just find that clarity was waiting for you all along.
